Why Professional Women in The Prime of Life?
Because it is a unique and important time in your life as a successful woman. Some mornings you wake up wondering, "Is this all there is?" Other times you feel a sense of gratitude and excitement at the possibilities! You realize that you are in a unique position to focus your time and energy on things that matter to you. Your desire to experience a sense of purpose and meaning in your life and your work is amplified…and you may feel an almost unstoppable urge to connect with yourself and your career in a deeper, more meaningful way. At the core is a realization that things are changing.
And, given that we are, in general, living longer lives, this prime time of our lives can be decades long! We can explore multiple careers and live fuller lives that are healthy, vibrant and exciting.
A woman's 40s, 50s and 60s are the three most dynamic decades of a woman's professional life. In your 40s and early 50s you may be feeling like a “hot mess”! You are likely in the midst of perimenopause or will be any minute. You may still have young children at home. You may be in perimenopause and have teenagers - God help you! This is also a time when you are striving in your career. You may have aging parents that you are attending to. You likely have demands on your time and energy coming from multiple sources.
From early 50s to 60s you may still be in perimenopause and you may still be caring for teenagers. You may well have aging parents that you are taking care of in some way. You may be dealing with losses as people in your life age and perhaps pass away or simply move off in a new direction. You are also at the peak of your career and beginning to think about what comes next. Are you thinking about a venture of your own? Are you thinking about retirement? You may be postmenopausal and feeling some emotional and physical aspects that need your attention. This is also a time of more freedom, enhanced creativity, heightened spirituality and deepening self-reflection.
While this is a normal stage in adult development, it can be a confusing and challenging time for many women. And, because senior executives and other professional women are visible to so many, responsible for so much, and have few, if any, confidants in the workplace, it can be a difficult experience. You have a lot on your plate and now you are perhaps feeling:
We know all too well, that the business and professional worlds don’t always support women in the best ways. We also know that as women, we tend to feel more invisible as we mature in our youth obsessed culture. So, put those two realities together and a woman can feel a little left on on sidelines! Let's explore the great options that are now open to you at what is really an amazing time of your life!
As a smart and successful woman, you have accomplished a lot in your life. You're well-educated, maybe had and raised or are still raising children, run a household, built a career, and maybe built departments or whole companies. You are a person who does significant things and no doubt wants to continue doing significant things in your life and career. Younger women may be coming into your sphere and you have the opportunity to mentor them to reach their own full potential. (Or, maybe you feel them nipping at your heels and you are as annoyed as all get-out!) But you are becoming aware of a growing desire, a curiosity, perhaps a longing for something else - for a new and different way to express the person you are becoming.
This adult moment in a woman's life is complicated. It can cause you to question many aspects of your life:
I meet many women in the prime of their lives who are restless, dissatisfied, curious and are longing for more meaning in their lives. Women make big decisions and potentially big changes at this time of life. You want to make sure the ones you make are the right ones for you!
You have many vibrant years ahead of you. Let's work together to make them some of the best years of your life!
My "WHY"
I have been passionate about women's issues my whole life. I was drawn to supporting women in business and professional leadership as I wanted to see more women's voices at the leadership tables that influence the human and economic well-being of the world.
And, I was drawn to Jungian theories during my psychology education. I was fascinated with his understanding of adult development. By my late twenties I was an insatiable consumer of literature relating to midlife and was surprised to discover that there was not very much being written or taught about adult developmental stages until the 1950s and 60s . Once I arrived at the prime of my own life, I felt compelled to educate and support other women on their journey. In recent years, there has been much exciting research done in the fields of neuroscience and the science of happiness that shed new light on the aging process and the pivotal nature of the adult developmental time known as midlife. My work is rooted in love and a recognition that we have one conscious life to live. To support you in living that life with passion and commitment is my journey in this lifetime.
And, let's not forget those special times in our lives: Perimenopause and menopause with its attendant fatigue, hot flashes, headaches, emotional sensitivity and modulation - all truly not fun in the workplace and challenging at home as well. Current research helps us to understand more about what is happening and how to deal with it all. The impact of these experiences can look like poor performance or disengagement to peers, bosses and direct reports. A clear understanding can keep these times less disruptive to our professional and personal lives.
I thoroughly enjoy my work with women in the prime of their lives, helping them to gracefully traverse this uneven terrain. Guiding women along this journey is my most fulfilling work.
"Me Time"
Truly powerful, inspiring, and influential leaders are authentic people. In order to maintain this high level of authenticity on a continual basis, you must actively pursue an ongoing process of personal development and engaged self-awareness. Additionally, stepping up to the demands of a senior role requires a regimen of self-care that supports high-level performance on a consistent basis. Exercise, eating well, and negotiating necessary personal down-time are all part of the energy-management package that assures individual success, a high level of contribution, and personal and professional satisfaction. Being in midlife amplifies these needs, adds deeper dimensions and gives a whole new meaning to "Me Time". And, at this time of your life, life should be more about you and what you want to contribute to the world!
And, some other thoughts to consider this time in your life.
