Your Body and Mind on Menopause

What are Perimenopause and Menopause?
Picture
Perimenopause is the transitional time that starts as early as your thirties
when your hormones begin to change and lasts until menopause which
occurs 12 months after your last period. It is typical for women to start
feeling the symptoms of hormonal change in their mid-to late 40s.
However, it is not unusual for women to start experiencing symptoms
earlier than that. If you think that you are entering perimenopause you
may want to speak with a menopause specialist. There are many
telehealth options with organizations, such as genevv, that specialize in
supporting women in menopause. And, you can find a menopause
specialist in your area by going the North American Menopause Society website and entering your zip-code. Women who have experienced no period for 12 consecutive months are considered to be in menopause. However, it is not uncommon for women to continue to experience some symptoms for a few more years into post-menopause.

What are the symptoms?
Picture
There many symptoms that women experience when their hormones
start to decline. Because there are estrogen receptors (a region of
tissue, or a molecule in a cell membrane, which responds specifically
    to a particular hormone)
all over the body women can experience
these symptoms in several different systems of the body. This is why
we can experience dry eyes, joint pain, gastro-intestinal discomfort,
heart palpitations as well as cramps and hot-flashes. Here is a list of
the 40 most typical symptoms. You should always check with your
doctor anytime you are experiencing troubling symptoms to be sure
of the reason. You can also connect with a telehealth provider or
menopause specialist about your symptoms. Every woman is different and may experience very different symptoms. However, some of the most concerning and distressing symptoms for professional women in the workplace are extreme fatigue, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, irritability, profound anxiety and depression. These symptoms can impact performance and the perception of performance. 25% of women consider leaving their jobs because of symptoms of menopause. You are not alone and there are resources available to you to help you understand what you are feeling and how to manage it all.

How to get the support that you need.

These days there is a lot of information available about perimenopause
and menopause. The North American Menopause Society website is a
good place to start. There are any number of books about the topic -
some are purely informational, others are written with humor and are
designed to keep your spirits up as you face what can be a challenging
time. Explore your options simply by entering books about menopause
into your search engine and take a look around.
I provide services to companies who would like to provide training to
leadership and staff about creating a Menopositive Workplace so if you
are at a company that is ready to take that important step feel free to contact me.
Most importantly don't suffer alone and in silence. Menopause is a natural and normal process that every
woman experiences. Everyone 's experience is different - but you are in good company when you reach out
for information and support!
